The average unit farm-gate value of tilapia (US$1.71/kg) was much lower than that of prawns (US$5.37/kg). Thus, global prawn production was only ∼9% of the level of tilapia production but its farm-gate value was nearly 30%. The average unit price of prawns is actually higher than that of marine shrimp (FAO 2015).

A very comprehensive review of the integration of prawn and fish culture generally is presented in New et al. (2010). In this chapter, we concentrate on the polyculture and co-culture of tilapia species with prawn species. For the purposes of this text, polyculture is defined as the rearing of two or more species (e.g., prawns and tilapia) in water bodies without physical separation, whereas co-culture is the rearing of two or more species in the same water body but incorporating physical separation (e.g., one species in cages).
